Barbara deCew makes paintings and sculptures that defy categorization. She is inspired by the captivation of power & drama in the soulful nature of water. Highly original Acrylic on canvas and Pen & Ink on paper convey an exploration in color of water reflections filled with complicated interplay and motion. Veils of translucent color illuminate the harmony of her soft sculpture which converge into atmospheric forms that stand or float as a mobile.
Liberated by her inspiration and love of art, Barbara studied and practiced throughout her childhood in Miami. When she relocated to NY she attended the Art Students League. Independent study & work supplemented by exposure to art lectures, literature, extensive travel to national & international museums, a course at the Silvermine Guild of Artists in New Canaan, CT and work with acclaimed artists within her Millpond Studio in Northeastern CT and RIVAA studios in NYC lend to her reputation as a mature & masterly painter.
Barbara has resided and maintained studios in New York and Eastern Long Island; Microlimino Harbor, Piraeus, Greece; Coventry, Rowayton and Norwalk, CT; Venice, CA; Marco Island, FL; Astoria and currently Roosevelt Island, NY.
Paintings and Sculptures have been widely exhibited throughout New England and privately collected internationally. She was a winner of two sculpture awards while a member of the Rowayton Arts Guild, CT and is a member of RIVAA (Roosevelt Island Visual Arts Association) who exhibit her work frequently at the RIVAA and OCTOGON Galleries on Roosevelt Island.
